George Michael’s very first number 1 single was “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go”, performed by Wham!, his duo with childhood friend Andrew Ridgeley. Confirming them both as household names and international heartthrobs. The song was nominated for a “Best Pop Performance by a Group or Duo with Vocals.

Careless Whisper (1984)

Careless Whisper was George Michael’s first solo number 1 hit, despite the fact that it came out before Wham! broke up, and it is featured on Wham’s album Make it Big. Even though the track was a massive success, George admitted that he wasn’t a big fan of the song. “I have no idea, but it's ironic that this song - which has come to define me in some way - should have been written right at the beginning of my career when I was still so young. I was only 17 and didn't really know much about anything - and certainly nothing much about relationships,” George said to Big Issue in 2009.

Freedom (1984)

Freedom, reached #1 in the UK and #3 in the States the following year. George Michael said in a 2009 interview with Big Issue that writing Freedom as 19 year old shocked him, and that he then began to take himself seriously as a songwriter. George Michael would later go on to release “Freedom ‘90” during his solo career- a song about shedding the image curated for him during his time in Wham!

I’m Your Man (1985)

A year after the success of “Wake Me Up” and “Freedom”, Wham! released “I’m Your Man.” The song was released as a single, and did not appear on a full-length album. Within 6 months of the song’s release, Wham! Had announced their split. “I’m Your Man” was the final song they played at their last show, at Wembley Stadium. **I'm not crying, you're crying**.

The Edge of Heaven (1986)

When Andrew Ridgeley and George Michael announced that they were breaking up Wham!, they released “The Edge of Heaven” as a farewell single. The song was performed at the band’s last show at Wembley Stadium in June of 1986.

A Different Corner (1986)

George Michael gave his solo career another chance with the release of “A Different Corner.” Similarly to “Careless Whisper,” the track appeared on a Wham! Album, despite it being a solo Michael song. It was the first #1 song in the UK to be written, produced, arranged, and performed by the same person.

I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me) w/ Aretha Franklin (1987)

George Michael’s third single as a solo musician with legend Aretha Franklin. In his autobiography, Bear, Michael admits that he was quite nervous to record with Franklin. However, the hard work paid off and the duo won George Michael’s first Grammy! The immensely talented Ray Estaire pays tribute to Aretha Franklin for The George Michael Story, by performing as her!

Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me w/ Elton John (1991)

Sixteen years after Elton John’s solo release of ‘Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me,” George Michael joined John to release a duet version. The pair had originally arranged the song as a duet for the 1985 event Live Aid. Proceeds from the song were donated to charities that benefited those with AIDS, education, and children. This release was 7 years before George Michael would publicly come out as gay.

Jesus to a Child (1996)

Jesus to a Child was written as a tribute to Anselmo Feleppa, who George Michael had dated in the early 90s. Feleppa died of an AIDS-related brain hemorrhage in 1993. From the time he came out in 1998 until his own death, Michael would dedicate the song to Feleppa before each performance.
